Two Zimbabwean nationals suspected to have broken into Loja Mall Choppies store in Francistown and stole large sums of money, cell phones, airtime and vouchers have been denied bail.

The two suspects, Matiba Ncube (27) unemployed and Nkululeko Dube (42) a former labourer at Shashe Farms are accused of breaking into Choppies store at Loja Mall on March 25, 2015.

According to court records, the duo is accused of stealingP167 197.10, R11 749.00, vouchers worth P2 300, cell phones and airtime cards amounting to P36 649.Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) prosecutor, Alexander Phale pleaded with the court to deny the two bail as police investigations are still at an early stage and that the second accused, Dube is an illegal immigrant with no working permit yet he was employed.

He further said the third suspect has not been arrested yet and also that the money stolen is suspected to have been deposited in Ncube’s bank account.

In his ruling, Senior Magistrate Siziba Sijabuliso denied the duo bail saying the prosecution’s fear that they might interfere with investigations is enough to convince the court especially that the money involved is substantial.

He further said although the interest of the society has to be balanced with the accused’s right to liberty, the prosecution’s submission carry more weight.

He concurred with the prosecution that police investigations are still at an early stage hence they could not be granted bail.

The suspects are scheduled to appear before the court for mention on April 21. ENDS
