Schools commemorate day for theatre

23 Mar 2015

Education in the performing arts is increasingly becoming a fundamental part of many primary and secondary education curricula.

The performing arts, mainly music, dance and theatre are significant elements of culture, hence found in many schools. Over the weekend (March 21-22), some primary and secondary schools converged at the Botswana National Museum to celebrate International Day for Theatre for Children and Young People.

The fun filled day was characterised by creative performances in comedy, drama, poetry, music and dance.

Many of these acts reflected the commitment teachers had when it came to training the students in ways to express ideas and emotions through performing arts.Music and dance were the highlights of the thrilling International Day for Theatre for Children and Young People commemoration.

Children Association of Performing Arts Botswana (CHIPABO) coordinator, Edward Moroka said the aim of the activity was to come to celebrate together as performing arts groups, at the same time spreading the different cultural messages through the performances.

Moroka, also founder of CHIPABO, said the organisation aimed to provide arts education and development for children and young people in an enjoyable manner.  He however noted that the slow growth of performing arts in the country tempted him to come up with such an organisation where they train young people aged 5 to 15.

Moroka said their desire as CHIPABO is to see young people graduating into becoming established artists earning a living from their talents.  ENDS
