Artistes lend helping hand

22 Mar 2015

Sekgele Training Home Society has invited comedians and musicians to take part and contribute in improving the lives of those disadvantaged in the name of charity.

The society coordinator, Gaolaolwe Mopolo revealed this recently in an interview during the society’s fund raising festival held to help people living with disabilities in the Okavango Sub-district.

He said the invited artistes were comedian Kelekwang Mophaneng aka ‘Rikonde’, artistes Boss of Rhumba, DJ Talent and Veleskatti.

He stressed that a few people came to support them and managed to raise at least P550, noting that people failed to come in large numbers because of the starting time.

They started when most of the people were still at work and school, and the event was held during the middle of the month when most were broke, he said.

Mopolo said the society was established with the mandate of improving the lives of People Living with Disabilities (PWDs) so that they can function as fully fledged citizens in all spheres of life.

He noted that they represent the interests of PWDs in the community, government and other relevant institutions within the Okavango Sub-district and around Botswana.

The coordinator elaborated that they have been operating with a limited staff comprising him as coordinator, adminstration assistant and volunteers, medical rehabilitation technician, pre-school teacher, accounts clerk, social worker, two teacher aides, two cooks, a handyman and  a cleaner, all remunerated under the Ministry of Health.

He however added that they are defied by shortage of funds to build their own office although they have a plot. Mopolo added that for now the district council offered them one where they are currently operating, but appealed to the government and the public at large to aid them.

He said that membership is open to everyone with interest in issues of disabilities and is willing to accept the society’s constitution and abide by its rules and regulations and pay annual subscription. ENDS
