Maun police investigate murder case

23 Dec 2014

Maun police are investigating a murder case in which a 28-year-old woman of Jamataka was murdered by her 27-year-old boyfriend at Lake Ngami in Sehithwa on Sunday (December 21).

Senior Superintendant Chabaesele Kesupetswe said in an interview that the two had a misunderstanding and the boyfriend hit his girlfriend, severely injuring her. Senior Supt Kesupetswe further said the woman collapsed and was taken to Letsholathebe II Memorial Hospital in Maun where she was certified dead.

He said the incident was the second murder case, which involved lovers in less than three weeks at Lake Ngami.

A 32-year-old woman of Kasane was recently shot twice on the back by a 51-year-old man also from Kasane, in what was believed to be a misunderstanding that ensued between the lovers. Senior Supt Kesupetswe advised that people should have tolerance and involve third parties when they have disputes instead of resorting to violence.

Still in Maun, Senior Supt Kesupetswe said the police were investigating four cases of fraud by Batswana who agreed to buy fish on behalf of some Zambian nationals at Lake Ngami but instead disappeared with the money. He cautioned Batswana to refrain from such acts as they would tarnish the image of Botswana and the relationship between the two countries.

He further said those who entered into such agreements should do it in good faith to maintain the good reputation associated with Botswana.

Senior Supt Kesupetswe said Maun police were worried by cases of rape, which were rife, especially with culprits that the victims could not identify. He said there were common cases of women carousing with men who ended up raping them but it was unfortunate that the women could not tell even the alleged rapists names. He therefore advised women to desist from such friendships with unknown men.

Senior Supt Kesupetswe noted that although the festive mood had started in Maun, the people had so far maintained peaceful behaviour and order. ENDS
