Mopwa tackles youth problems through arts

19 Nov 2014

Mopwa Wa Kazi traditional group, formed in 2010 in Gumare, seems to be succeeding in its aim of keeping youth out of streets and curbing youth related problems at the same time.

Speaking in a recent interview, the group leader, Gaboitsewe Bakhai said issues such as HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancy, alcohol and drug abuse were rising, yet they could be addressed through performing arts.

Ms Bakhi said the group was formed against the backdrop of many unemployed youth roaming the streets of Gumare indulging in unacceptable practices such as alcohol abuse, early and unprotected sex, as well as crime.

The Seperu dance group has 30 members made of 25 women and five men, and Ms Bakhai said there were few men in the group because most men were more interested in playing football.

She said their group rehearsed on a daily basis, except on weekends, and that they managed to catch the eyes of the people as they were being hired to perform at wedding ceremonies, parties and government events.

The group leader said with the money they earn, they had managed to buy props for their group. She said they also took part in ward competitions even though they had never qualified for the President Day competition finals.

They have also opened a savings account for the group while they sometimes share extras among themselves. Their group is also a member of Ngwao Loshalaba, which helps to market them internationally.

They do not only meet to dance, but have scheduled some dates for group counselling. ENDS
