03 Nov 2014
Bernard Benny Sekgwa is an afro pop artist from Gumare and a man of many talents. His confidence and passion for music radiates from his face and smile when he talks about his work.
He is a songwriter of all music genres, plays every instrument and teaches music in his spare time to earn a living.
Benny has worked with various artistes notably Kearoma Rantao a multi BOMU award winner and a recent African Muzik Magazine Awards (Afrimma) nominee on a song titled ‘Pelo Seetsele’, which is yet to be released.
He said that his songs are motivated by love and appreciation of the beauty of women and draws inspiration from the woman close to his heart.
His first album was produced by Tshepo Lesolle and released in 2013 with a track list consisting of the album title song Bontlenyana, Shupinki which is an adoration name, Serurubele, Motho wame, Lezothi which all describe the beauty of women likened to the colours of butterflies and lastly Bosigo ja Lerato.
Serurubele which was produced by Robert Dargiirira and Bosigo ja lerato are current hits in the airwaves. Benny was nominated for Best Afro Pop in the BOMU awards and also has an upcoming single ‘Ke mo leratong’ which will soon be released.
He said that he was not a man of God while growing up but now he is a very spiritual person and a firm believer after surviving the brutal hands of mobsters who ambushed and stabbed him in the eyes with knives and eventually got blinded.
Benny said his visual impairment does not hinder him from doing what he is passionate about. He said blindness brought so many changes and it was very difficult for his family to accept. He thanked God and said it was by his grace that he has managed to be where he is right now and for the life he has given him even when he walked through the valley of the shadow of death.
He said that despite the painful incident, he continues to embrace life and work hard. He feels it was a blessing in disguise and acknowledged the people who have been there for him, his family, Cliff Kepaletswe for believing in him, Boitumelo Rapitse and Pudulogong rehabilitation centre for their endless support.
Lastly, he said that people should love and be passionate and also follow their dreams, “nothing is impossible even with disability”, he added. The Album is in all Choppies stores countrywide. ENDS
