Kgosi Malope II says culture remains the bedrock to raise a responsible and forward looking nation.
Kgosikgolo who performed official opening of Ntebogang Junior Secondary School cultural house Thursday, September 25, said that teaching pupils Setswana cultural values and customs help mould children into well rounded citizens that could meaningfully contribute to the wellbeing of Botswana.
“It is imperative to learn good attributes of one’s culture at an early age and shun foreign cultures that have destroyed Botswana moral fibre especially among the youth,” he said.
Such cultures, Kgosi Malope posited are not only misleading but have bred such undesirables like hooliganism.
Giving students a brief lecture on the naming of Ntebogang Junior Secondary School, Kgosi Malope II said the name was Bangwaketse gesture of paying homage to Ntebogang Gaseitsewe who reigned as Kgosi for Bangwaketse from 1924 to 1928.
The heroine, he stated was holding fort for the rightful heir, Kgosi Bathoen II who could not assume the reigns because of his tender age at the time.
Kgosi Bathoen II would later ascend to the position of Kgosikgolo at the age of 21 in 1928, the same year Kgosigadi Ntebogang relinquished the position.
The School’s Parents and Teachers Associations charperson, Olefile Kgosietsile said the idea to construct a Setswana house came about after the realization that students performed dismally in Setswana. The construction of the cultural house, he mentioned will go a long way in addressing the deficit and close the gap.
“The development will facilitate favorable learning environment for Setswana and other cultural aspects and hopefully improve students’ results,” he said. ENDS
