Gabriel ekes out living from sculptures

31 Aug 2014

Joel Gabriel (37) of Mandunyane says though there are limited employment opportunities in his home village, sitting home and doing nothing never crossed his mind.

He decided to use his artistic talent to brush off the poverty in his life. This helped him escape engaging in alcohol abuse and crime.

“I have always been an artist, even when I was young I used to draw a lot. My passion towards art was also propelled by the practical course in design and technology that I did while a student at Tonota junior secondary school,” he said.

Gabriel said upon completion of his junior certificate, though he did not do well, he never looked back. Rather he used his artistic talent to earn a living. He said he practiced sculpturing until he perfected it and now he is good at what he does.

The vibrant artist said he designs almost everything depending on what the clients want.

He explained that he uses wires, cement and papers to design his sculptures. Gabriel said he takes time to discuss the needs of clients and offers advice where necessary.

“This job is very challenging because most of the time, clients come looking for something but without any particular design in mind. We sit down and discuss ideas,” he said.

Gabriel said though he can make ends meets from the profits he makes, his main worry is that some customers complain about pricing despite the creativity and labor put into the artifacts.

Nonetheless, his love for art keeps s him going even though there are challenges. ENDS
