Police warn against social crime
05 Aug 2014
Botswana Police Service says it has observed that some people continue to commit offences under the guise of interacting through social media.
A press release from the police service states that these people use insulting language, threaten others, criminally defame, blackmail, extort and even distribute obscene or pornographic material using social media.
It further states that these acts are a contravention of the Penal Code, cybercrime and computer related crimes and other laws of Botswana.
The police have also noted that the majority of the victims suffer in silence despite the presence of the laws and the law enforcement to deal with such offences. “We want to encourage and urge the victims to report such cases to the police,” says the release.
According to the release, the police also advise those who are in the habit of committing such offences that the long arm of the law will in no time catch up with them. Ends
