Ethnic groups should embrace culture

24 Jul 2014

Lack of documentation of culture is a common problem among African nations.

This was said by the North West Assistant District Commissioner, Mogomotsi Madome at the Otjiserandu Ombazu Jovaherero cultural event in Tsau recently.

Madome said that culture was dynamic, therefore it was vital for it to be documented by ethnic groups themselves to appreciate and embrace their cultures. “Our stories should be written by ourselves not by outsiders,” he said, adding that the Baherero have a rich culture, and it was important for it to be imparted to young people in order for them to have a rich cultural heritage.

He cited the ethnic group’s aptitude at rearing cattle, their history and attire, which he said ought to be imparted to the young generations. Madome pointed out that Botswana embraced a diverse nationhood, which tolerates each other and lives peacefully.

He said it was high time that culture was esteemed and celebrated and encouraged the Baherero to celebrate their culture without intimidation.

Furthermore, Madome implored the Baherero from Namibia and Botswana to continue embracing the bilateral relationship they have, which is cemented by their common culture.

In his remarks, the Otjiserandu Ombazu Jovaherero president in Botswana, Justice Muinjo implored his tribesmen to rise above challenges so that the cultural event does not cease. He expressed sadness that this year’s event did not start on time and was not well attended as compared to the previous years.

Tsau Kgosi, Ebineng Potsoeng said although things did not go according to plan, it was however, worthy noting that the day was successfully held to celebrate and honour the Baherero heroes, who brought the ethnic group to Botswana during the times of war.

He encouraged Baherero to be committed to the annual celebration and commemoration. The cultural event was attended by Baherero from Botswana and Namibia, with the celebrations on the first day and visiting graveyards of the fallen heroes on Sunday. ENDS
