Fighters pursues life in art

Born 35 years ago with a love for art at an early age, it was quite evident to Fighters Fanikiso’s parents that their son will go on to pursue a life in art.
Fast forward to now and the man is living his dream of being an artist and looking to leave a long lasting legacy for himself and his family.
“I actually multi-task when it comes to art but as of now I specialisze in making sculptures,” he said in an interview.
He indicated that he did not pursue art at tertiary level and only did art during his secondary school years because he was good at it.
“I consider it to be a God given talent and I am very grateful for all those who played a part in my journey, past and present,” he said.
On being quizzed on how business is with regards to his art pieces, Fighters indicated that people do buy but it is not satisfactory.
“They usually enquire about prices but only a few people end up buying my work,” he said, adding that government is doing everything it can to stimulate the art industry, but government cannot do it alone.
He further said he is a member of Thapong Art Centre, and being a member of the centre has presented various opportunities for him.
“I have been a member since 2011 if I am not mistaken and it has been very helpful especially with the exhibitions that are held there with the hope of exposing us artists to potential customers,” said Fighters.
He stated that the only problem that he seems to be facing now besides lack of sales is not having a proper workshop to do his work.
“Working from home and not having a decent workshop is affecting my workmanship to some point,” he said, indicating that if he was to get a proper workshop, he would be happy.
On his dreams going forward, Fighters said he want to help out upcoming youngsters with art, but having not acquired a tertiary qualification hinders his aspirations.
“Just because I do not have qualifications does not mean I do not know art and I wish these institutions of higher learning can use us either way,” he said.
Fighters also said he wishes more can be done on public education for artists in Botswana so that they are well versed in all aspects of art and how they can move forward. ENDS
