Aspiring gospel singers to prove point

03 Jul 2014

South African businessman, Malaika Mesoko, is in Botswana to search for new gospel talent.

Mesoko has brought along young and promising gospel artist Koliwe Mpaneng, who is due to launch his debut gospel album in Botswana on September 6. Mesoko is in Botswana to scout for local gospel singers who will provide backing vocalists for Kolilwe.

“We are looking for backing vocalists who have not yet released albums. We want this launch to be fresh, with new artists who will bring a new feel to it,” he said.

He added that the new artists would also get an opportunity to break new barriers and gain exposure to the limelight.“This is a rare opportunity for fresh talent from both Botswana and South African artists to combine forces and produce beautiful music.

Artists from both countries must work together as equals to open doors for budding artists and benefit the arts,” he said.

Some key singers from local group Spirit of Praise featured in the auditions which took place at Sedibeng Lodge in Phase IV location in Gaborone on Saturday, July 5.

The plan is to identify eight vocalists, three key board players, two guitarists and one drummer who will back Koliwe, together with Spirit of Singers, during the launch of her album.

Three of the local artists who will participate in the launch will later get an opportunity to be managed by Pagson Ntsie until they release their albums.

Mesoko, an entrepreneur who operates Chande Transport Tours and Enterprise in Lichtenburg near Mafikeng, said he is an avid follower of gospel music.

He added that he wants to give gospel artists an opportunity to spread the word through their music and also make a life out of music.

“Most gospel artists are poor in their later years because they don’t take music as a business but rather as a hobby. That’s why I opted to assist Kolilwe to establish a career in the music industry that will also support her in her later years,” she said.

The artist, Koliwe will be based in Botswana and proceeds from her album launch will benefit the Botswana Association of the Blind.

The project will be supervised by Taolo Moshaga, a renowned musician and community builder. The promoters intend to invite Vice President Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe to officiate at the handing over of the donation.  ENDS
