North West basket weavers to exhibit in Sweden

24 Jun 2014

A basketry exhibition is planned for Stockholm, Sweden this year in November to market and sell North West District baskets.

The North West District Council chairman, Mr Lathang Molonda said this during a full council meeting that two basket weavers from the district would have an opportunity to participate at the exhibition.

“We are starting to make giant strides as far as our partnership with the Hultsfreds Municipality is concerned,” he added.

In order to prepare for the exhibition, he said the Hultsfreds Municipality project team visited the district from the May 27 to June 3 this year and the district project team together with the two basketry women from the Maun Administrative Authority and Okavango Sub district had training on baskets story-telling, pricing and marketing.

Molonda revealed that the project team also had an opportunity to visit the basketry project in Shorobe and the Chanoga bakery.

He said it was pleasing to find that beneficiaries were using the business skills that they acquired during the training which was held last year.

The training was aimed at training the informal sector in business skills for sustenance of economic empowerment projects.

Hultsfreds Municipality and North West District Council came up with a business training manual which assisted in the training of the informal sector with a view to mitigate the impact of poverty. Ends
