My Star grand finale to feature youngsters

22 Jun 2014

The Grand Finale of this year’s My Star completion slated for July 4 will have a different twist because of the inclusion of performances by children, one of the talent show crew members, Senki Sesinyi, told the residents of the northern city on Saturday June 21.

Senki, who is also the brother to the forefather of the show, Keabetswe Sesinyi, aka Master Dee, revealed at the weekly show held at Adansonia Hotel after conducting a curtain-raiser competition for the children.

From the curtain raiser, two children were selected from the dance and song categories and for the first time the duo would perform at the grand finale to be held in Gaborone.

The dance category was scooped by 11-year-old Rachel Elijah, who mesmerised My Star audience by her dance moves to Uhuru song featuring DJ Bunkz, Oskido, Professor and Ur-Da-Cunha’s Y-tjukutja, while 12-year-old Anita Lekuni spellbound the audience with her melodious voice.

Senki also promised that, apart from being given the chance to perform at the grand finale, My Star would sponsor Anita and Rachel’s attire for the performance.

One could confidently say the performance by the children was not only a curtain-raiser, but also a warm up for the audience prior to a hot performance by My Star’s top five contestants.

As it is custom, the competition kicked off with duets and trios and in this particular show it started with a trio by Obakeng, Leonard and Peter, while the only lady remaining in the show, Tshegofatso, My Star number 06 was the first one in the sole performances in what the judges termed her ‘cold performance’.

The other four contestants; namely Obakeng, Ontefetse, Peter and Boikanyo, who are My Star artistes number 02, 03, 17 and 26 respectively impressed both the judges and the audience resulting in the audience flocking to the stage to give them money. Leonard, who was eliminated on Friday June 20 and My Star 2013 winner Tebogo, also performed at the show.

Just like in the previous performances, the poor audience attendance did not escape Master Dee’s attention as he said he wondered if it was due to the cold weather. He implored the audience to keep voting because their votes determine whoever wins the competition.

Two contestants will be eliminated on Friday 27 and the top three will perform in Kasane the following weekend. My Star is a TV talent show that seeks to identify musical talent among budding local artistes and it usually attracts many aspiring musicians. ENDS
