Crime down in Kang
10 Jun 2014
Commissioner of Botswana police, Mr Keabetswe Makgophe says serious and violent crimes have gone down at Kang in Kgalagadi District for the past three years.
Speaking during the handing over of small stock to the Xhai family in Kang recently, Mr Makgope said that it was pleasing to note that the partnership between Botswana Police Service and the community with regard to crime reduction in Kang was bearing fruits.
He said serious crimes such as break-ins and robbery had drastically gone down in the region, adding that rape was however the only crime that had assumed an upward trend both in Kang and the district as a whole.
Mr Makgophe stated that more attention needed to be paid on rape reduction as statistics reflected that rape cases increased from seven to nine between 2012 and 2013.
He said even though the district recorded an increase in stock theft cases between 2012 and 2013, it was pleasing to note that Kang police service managed to reduce stock theft cases from 20 to 14 in the same year.
The overall achievement in crime reduction, he said was a result of the strong and constant collaboration between the police and members of the public.
“This productive and mission driven relationship between the police and community should therefore be nurtured and sustained for continued success,” he said.
In addition to delivering on its core mandate Botswana Police Service he said, contributed to other commitments of national priority such as poverty eradication and housing initiatives, hence they donated to the Xhai family.
“The Bible teaches us that you shall not harden you heart, nor close your hand from your poor brother. As a responsible organisation, we shall continue to demonstrate the spirit of compassion and care to the less privileged which lies with the vision pillar of a compassionate, just and caring nation,” he said.
He further stated that police stations and units across the country continued to voluntarily assist the needy in their respective areas by building shelters, donation of clothing and groceries.
The Xhai family became the recent recipients of such a noble gesture from the Police service as they were given small stock. Ends
