PATNAM new fashion trend

22 May 2014

Many young people are getting into the fashion industry and making wonders.

Patrick Mhaladi, who is based in Bobonong, is one new fashion designer who is surely carving his way into the Botswana fashion industry.

Mhaladi is the owner of PATNAM Fashion Company, derived from his first names, Patrick and Nametso.

He has taken the handicraft to greater heights by designing clothes for many people.

In an interview, Mhaladi said he has always dreamt of starting his own business and that it was a dream come true for him.

Mhaladi said his inspiration into the fashion industry came after he completed his National Craft Certificate in fashion design at Borolong Vocational Training Centre in 2011.

He said in 2012 the Department of Youth gave him P82 000 to start the business, and with that money he found a place to rent, bought sewing machines and other materials needed.

However, he said at first it was difficult for the business to pick up, but that things began to fall in place. Mhaladi designs include ladies, men’s and children’s wear, German print dresses, bedding and curtains.

The business is moving smoothly, he said.

Mhaladi cited transport challenges as he has to travel to Selebi Phikwe and Francistown to purchase fabrics, equipment and needles.

He said his future plans include participating in government tenders to design uniforms, organising a fashion show in Bobonong as a way of giving back to the community.

He said fashion has changed his life as he is able to employ other people. ENDS
