The worth of a mother is priceless, mothers are a true epitome of child bearing and rearing through pleasant and testing times.

One may ask themselves, the role of a mother in the Setswana culture. A mother is a backbone of every family, the pillar of many nations and a parent to all. Mothers are often celebrated on the second Sunday of May which is tilled “Mother’s day.”

Mother’s day is celebrated in different ways to show appreciation to mothers for the contribution they make to livelihoods, upbringing, nurturing and just celebrating the maternal love one gets.

Adding to the celebrations, a single mother of one, Miss Ivy Bayford mentioned that, she always celebrates mother’s day with her family and is thrilled to be a mother. She said that as a mother, one’s priority is for the sole wellbeing of her child. “I am a proud mother because the greatest reward in life is taking care of your child and being called mommy,” she says.

For her part Ms Gofaone Motse an expectant mother, stated that she does not celebrate mother’s day, because she feels that every day she has to give thanks to her mother.

She added that she is looking forward to being a mother, raising her child in a loving home with both parents and she wants her son to-be to grow up and become a priest to serve the Lord.

The Rail Park Mall did not remain behind in honoring ordinary mothers, dedicating this weekend to all of them. The mall hosted a Rail Park Mommies cooking show in conjunction with the Young Chef’s Academy.

The day was filled with festive and fun events that accommodated children and their mothers. Activities such as face painting, balloons, trolley dashes and demonstrations of cooking entertained the crowd with celebrities and music. The trolley dash was won by Pauline Andries who expressed her excitement and thanked the Rail Park mall for winning her groceries.

The cooking show consisted of 10 participants of a team of two, who show cased their cooking skills in a three round battle to win the prize money worth P5 000.

The first round was a non-elimination round that saw contestants building stable and tall towers using spaghetti and marshmallows. The second round saw the contestants given a recipe to prepare a chicken stew served with rice and three teams were eliminated.

The final show down was a dessert preparation by the final two Miss Keamogetse Setshwano and Ms Asahapelo Tumediso who were assisted by the guest judges Dj Dollar Mac and Tshepo Ntshole.

Team Dollar Mac and the young 19 year old Ms Tumediso, scooped the prize money of P5 000 and her runner up Miss Setshwano was given P2 500.
Ms Tumediso said she was going to  redecorate her mother’s kitchen and cook her a beautiful meal on mother’s day to celebrate her. ENDS
