07 May 2014
The 24-year-old afro pop sensation, Potty 'Opelo' William has released an album featuring six tracks with one of the songs dedicated to his sister, Rocetah.
Potty’s tracks give people a better understanding of their life experiences and knowledge and an insight that what happens to a neighbour can also happen to anyone.
His album entitled Maja-a-itshutlha has a song called Rocetah geared towards comforting his sister who had a hard time following the death of their mother who had been paralysed for 17 years.
The first words of the song start like, “I dedicated this song to my young sister Rosie, who had hard times when we lost our lovely mother, Rosie, nnaka, a re iphimole dikeledi, mama o rapetse, a re iphimole dikeledi, mama o rapetse, a re iphimole dikeledi, ke tlaa go rekela sakatukwi, re iphimole dikeledi.”
He consoled her that she must stop crying and worrying because with God’s grace it shall be alright and God has played his part. He is asking her to wipe her tears and be strong and leave everything to God.
Potty said Rocetah, who is doing her form five has not yet heard the song and he was still thinking how he was going to relay the message to her. The title track Maja-a-itshutlha, talks about those men who like to gossip about ladies and yet they are the ones who later date them.
The other hit is Ke sure ka story, where Potty is proud of his partner and praises her for her good behavior.
The sweet love song starts with touching lyrics “o wame, ke sure ka story, go dijo o apeile, sejana ke sa letsopa.” This song is a heartfelt string of romantic words from a lover.
The song reminds the listener that sometimes words are just not enough to describe those deep, genuine feelings of love. Another hit that follows is Moipolai, where Potty encourages the spirit of teamwork. Hallo is a praise song for the female gender, more especially those with beautiful bodies and he calls them African queens.
The last one, O jelwe, speaks of those people who turn to change when they get to the city; they forget where they are coming from and adopt the city life, and after that they end up in a very bad situation. They start to squander the money in unnecessary things.
Potty who was born in Serule said his vision is to see the youth living a better focused life.
He said he chose afro-pop because it gave him an opportunity to deliver messages on weddings and love to the youth and elderly.
Explaining where he started in the music industry, Potty said he first tried his luck at My Star talent search show in 2013, and he was selected for the top 20. Unfortunately, he said, he had a car accident during the competition so he could not continue.
Maja-a-itshutlha which was recorded at Dargie Digital Studio would be launched towards the end of this month in Francistown.
Five other tracks in the album were produced at Nice Cut Production where he worked with Robert Dargie and Kitso Mauchaza as his producers.
Potty said he realised his talent during his performance with amongst others Skavenja, Ashley Gops, Umanga and Slizer. He worked at Nortex Communication as a quality control inspector and later quit to pursue Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management course at ABM University College. ENDS
