Education Hub holds cultural exchange
05 May 2014
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, Richard Matlhare says teachers are the pillars of the nation and should be treated as such.
Speaking at a cultural exchange night organised for staff and students of University of Louisville by the Education Hub, Matlhare said without education Botswana would not be where it is today.
“We cannot talk about teachers and not mention students because they are important too as they are the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
He said Batswana students should aspire to study at reputable universities abroad; adding that the five- year- old partnership between Botswana and University of Louisville should be cherished.
“They do not come here just because they want to see Africa, but it is an investment for all parties involved,” he said.
Matlhare said the cultural exchange night provided an opportunity to Batswana to showcase their culture.
He also quoted from the country’s first president who said, “A nation without culture is a lost nation.”
He also described Batswana as a happy nation which has vision and quite often expresses itself through music, dance and the spoken word.
Teachers and students from Nanogang Junior Secondary School, Maoka Junior Secondary School and KwenaSereto Junior Secondary School showcased how a bride is sought in Sekgatla culture.
The visitors were also treated to Setswana cuisine, music and dance. ENDS
