Lesedi Motsumi, also known as Oxy in the music circles has released a new single entitled Bana ba ba Metsi.
Born in Palapye and having started music at the age of 10, Oxy said in an interview that he grew up listening to different kind of music only to develop love for motswako later.
He said his love for the hip hop subgenre was triggered after listening to local artistes such as Scar, Nomadic and Kast. After taking part in hip hop competitions such as Sprite, Oxy felt he had to record his own songs.
He thereafter recorded a single called Pilara which featured kwaito sensation Coloza. Bana ba ba metsi was his first radio single and it has made airplay in local radio stations.
It is a motswako track that appreciates Botswana’s beautiful women. “The hype behind the track was to appreciate beautiful Botswana women. I ended up calling it Bana ba ba Metsi because I compared the beauty of water with the beauty of young girls in Botswana,” said Oxy.
In the single, Oxy brings in cohesion of motswako and the swagger associated with local street-corner hip hop. As an artiste who used to fight in the streets as a teenager, it does not come as a surprise.
Inspired by Vee, Mzambiya, Msawawa and Coloza, Oxy also showcases an element of kwaito rapping along with a production that was well thought out.
As a song that celebrates beautiful women, the lyrics are fresh and hard hitting. In his effort to introduce himself to the music fraternity, Oxy has other singles called Tshutshu and Motion.
Oxy who is a doing business information system at Limkomkwing University said he wanted to concentrate on music when he completed his studies. Oxy is a new comer but his production choices, features and validity provide hope going forward.
He said one of the reasons why he did music was to spread the message so that the younger generation could appreciate the Setswana culture. Meanwhile, Oxy is currently working on a mixtape called “Sandwich” which is expected to come out soon. ENDS
