Ontiretse faces child negligence charges

31 Mar 2014

After four weeks of evading police, 35-year-old Ontiretse Nku was found relaxing at her lover’s place at Kgopa Boseja ward in Thamaga during the early hours of March 23 and was arrested by Thamaga police officers.

The unemployed Nku of Motlhabane ward in Thamaga consequently appeared before Molepolole Senior Magistrate William Modise facing a charge of neglect of children.

The prosecution said Nku neglected her five children, all aged under 13, by leaving them and showing no further interest in them at Kgopa Boseja ward in Thamaga on March 1.

Sub Inspector Mishingo Kedikanetswe of Thamaga Police Station asked the court that the accused reserve her plea because investigations were still on going. Mr Kedikanetswe said accused did not deserve bail because she had been evading arrest.

“I do concur with you because it would not serve any purpose even if the court grants her bail as she doesn’t look after her children,” Senior Magistrate Modise said.

Nku told the court that her first two children had a different father from the other three. She said she knew the first father by first name only and that the man was no longer in her life. She presented to the court the father of the other three children. She informed the court that she did not drink.

Senior Magistrate Modise said the first father must help Nku raise their two children. He said the social worker’s case against Nku about the custody of the children would be dealt with at the next mention. Ends
