Youth must be responsible

18 Mar 2014

Young people in Kanye have been encouraged to behave responsibly on the road to avoid the ever so rising road mishaps that often involve the youth.

Speaking during a youth workshop in Kanye recently Sub Inspector Ans Lepang of Sejelo police in Kanye said over 50 per cent of the accidents involved particularly youthful male revellers at night.

Mr Lepang said most of the victims were unlicensed drivers yet allowed by parents to drive their cars, which they often did under the influence of alcohol, and advised the latter to desist from the habit.

He said government spent a lot of money which would have otherwise been used on other competing projects of national interest, repairing especially street and traffic lights usually destroyed by unlicensed youth drivers.

The officer warned that car owners who gave unlicensed drivers permission to use their vehicles would be charged P 500 while an unlicensed driver would be slapped with a P3 000 - P5 000 charge and P200 - P1 000 for not using a seat belt.

He further said a driver who either injured or killed someone in a road accident would be charged between P5000-15000 and suspended from driving for a year.

Under the theme, ‘the role of youth in road safety,’ Senior Assistant District officer Ms Thapelo Basimanebotlhe said the workshop was meant to encourage the youth to be responsible on the roads to avoid accidents. ENDS
