07 May 2026

Rwanda President, Mr Paul Kagame’s, two-day state visit which ended with a tour of the Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTC) yesterday, demonstrates a celebration of a partnership built on trust, innovation and mutual prosperity.

“We are privileged to host a leader whose nation has made remarkable strides in mining sustainability, innovation and community transformation,” said acting Minister of Minerals and Energy, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi, during the tour.

Mr Mmolotsi said Botswana was renowned for its diamonds,  saying the diamond industry had become more than a source of national wealth, but a testament to the resilience, ingenuity and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Since independence, diamonds have played an integral role in shaping Botswana’s identity as they symbolise the progress, ambition and the country’s determination to build a prosperous nation.

Rwanda therefore, stands as a formidable force in Africa’s mineral industry.

“Rwanda’s position as Africa’s largest tungsten producer and among the top tantalum producers speaks volumes about the nation’s mineral wealth and strategic vision.

We also commend Rwanda’s efforts in formalising and modernising its mining sector to enhance value addition, an area Botswana and Rwanda share common ambitions,” said Mr Mmolotsi.

He said the mining industry had evolved from small-scale operations into sophisticated, revenue-driven enterprises focused on maximising the value of Botswana’s natural resources with DTCB at the forefront of the transformation.

This, Mr Mmolotsi said positioned Botswana as a global leader in the diamond industry, hence proud to share the story of success with partners such as Rwanda.

“Botswana stands ready and eager to collaborate, learn from Rwanda’s remarkable journey and to explore opportunities that will benefit our peoples for generations to come,” he said.

Botswana’s strategic focus now extends beyond mining excellence to diversification in tourism, agriculture and other areas where Rwanda’s experiences can offer invaluable lessons.

As leaders of nations rich in natural resources and cultural heritage, Mr Mmolotsi called for stronger collaboration that enhanced sustainability, promoted market access and encouraged the sharing of best practices.

Thus, he said the two country’s partnership in the mineral sector could set an example for responsible and inclusive growth that benefits their communities while preserving the environment for future generations.
