Residents of Mahalapye have been encouraged to venture into the businesses of waste recycling.
This was said by the environmental health officer in Mahalapye Sub-district, Mr Patrick Oleseng. He said residents of Mahalapye had been given permission to scavenge for waste at Mahalapye landfill.
He further revealed that the response had been positive as people visited the landfill to collect items such as tins, papers and scrap metal for recycling purposes. “People can make a living from recycling waste, so we encourage them to venture into the business because the raw materials are readily available,” he said.
However, Mr Oleseng cautioned people to be careful not to get hurt and avoid injuries and infections when collecting waste. Mr Bonang Modikwe is one of the people who frequent Mahalapye Landfill to collect scrap metal. He revealed that he sells the scrap metal to scrap yards and uses the proceeds to take care of his family.
“I ventured into this business because I had been looking for a job for a long time without success. But now I am able to make a decent income to feed my family,” he said.
