Ngamiland gears up for poverty eradication workshop
13 Feb 2013
The fifth and biggest poverty eradication workshop is slated for Chanoga, 30km east of Maun in the Ngamiland District from April 13 to15.
Ngamiland District commissioner, Ms Bernadette Malala said dignitaries from different countries were expected to attend, among them President Hifikepunye Pohamba of Namibia and United Nations (UN) representatives while President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama is scheduled to deliver key note address.
The event will be held under the theme: Poverty eradication key to dignified and quality life for all.
Ms Malala also stated that the event would be broadcasted live in other countries, although she did not state such countries. She said committees had already started preparations for the event and meetings were held on Thursdays to brief the main committee on progress made. A meeting has also been held in Chanoga to inform residents about the event.
According to North West District chief community development officer, Mr Uyapo Mafunye, the district had been issued with P2 475 236.40 for poverty eradication projects.
Mr Mafunye said 26 clients were trained on sewing, 24 on bakery, 12 on hair dressing and four on catering.
He said out of the 515 clients who would benefit, 124 were registered destitute persons with the hope that they would eventually graduate.
Commenting on the budget, Ms Malala advised the sub-committees to interrogate the budget and cut unnecessary expenses. In an effort to boost the local business community, she said catering services would be provided by local catering companies not hotels.
She urged residents to position themselves and identify services they could provide such as marque tents so that they could also benefit from the event.
Poverty Eradication Unit official in the Office of the President (OP) Ms Kebabonye Molefhe said a special dispensation should be made for capable entrepreneurs without the necessary trading documents to provide services as long as the committee was satisfied with their hygiene standards.
Ms Molefhi added that even those who provided snacks for Ipelegeng workers would be considered for catering services. ENDS
