School head calls for stakeholders' involvement
10 Mar 2014
Swaneng Hill School Head, Ms Gabalape Autlwetse says stakeholders must be involved in chils upbringing.
Thus, she said, stakeholders such as parents teacher associations (PTA), church leaders, traditional leaders, village development committees and councillors, were crucial in the improvement of Swaneng’s BGSCE results which were released recently.
While others may look at the 1.1 per cent increase as nothing, she said as a school, it was significant. She stated that they were able to improve in their results by employing different laid out strategies to their learning.
However, she said to achieve something from these strategies they had to first deal with indiscipline and violence which was common in schools around the country “Since I came into this school in 2011, indiscipline was a problem, I could say for now our students are admirable,” she said.
She said discipline encompasses a lot of things, and it includes dressing properly by students. She said after improving discipline in the school, they were able to work on their strategies.
She said one of the strategies was the year plan which included writing tests, which were later analysed and the performances discussed. “We also have a morning study, which is a supervised study by volunteers from the staff.”
Ms Autwetse also said as teachers they were very much concerned about their learners’ performance adding that they formed house groups which were divided among teachers.
Those teachers, she said did mentoring and parenting and they also help the students with their welfare. She commended the parents whom she said were highly involved in their children learning.
“As a school we have made sure we involve them all the way. In fact we have a strong relationship with them,” she said. Ms Autwetse said every year they try by all means to produce good results, but she said limitation of resources was a problem.
Nonetheless, she said with the dedicated team as her disposal, they were determined and wants to see the school among top schools in the country or even better in the coming BGSCE results. Ends
