Ministry employs 160 boarding personnel
10 Mar 2014
The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Patrick Masimolole recently told Parliament that his ministry has employed 160 boarding personnel.
When answering a question in Parliament, Mr Masimolole said 152 of these were deployed in secondary schools while eight were in technical colleges. He added that out of the 160 employees, 73 were boarding masters while 87 were matrons.
He said some of these employees were engaged on permanent and pensionable terms while others were employed on 24 to 36 months contract terms. They were remunerated at salary scale C4/C3 and were appointed at C4 with salaries ranging between P64 136 and P74 232 per annum.
Mr Masimolole said upon completion of one year of satisfactory performance their salaries were upgraded to C3 ranging from P77 028 to P92 064 per annum.
Mr Masimolole said the job of boarding personnel could not be differentiated in terms of job complexities and skills required to perform at different level and as such a competency based career path cannot be developed for them as per the assessment of their job by the DPSM.
MP for Kgalagadi North, Mr Philip Khwae had asked the minister to state the number of boarding masters and matrons employed countrywide in schools, conditions of their employment and scales at which they are remunerated and their line of progression.
He also wanted to know what the minister is going to do to upgrade them if they don’t have a line of progression. Ends
