Director urges public officers to have competitive spirit

06 Mar 2014

Director in the Directorate of Public Service Management, Mr Carter Morupisi has asked public servants to have a competitive spirit in the work place.

When addressing public servants in Mahalapye Sub-district recently, Mr Morupisi said government continued to be the majority employer in Botswana, and urged civil servants as drivers of the economy to have a competitive spirit in delivering services to their clients.

“Civil servants compete with others. The competitive spirit will always contribute to the development of the country,” he said.

He further urged every civil servant to always display a competitive spirit as that will attract investors to set up projects here and create employment for Batswana.

Mr Morupisi said public servants must deliver quality services to ensure competitiveness in the global economy and he urged workers to eradicate poor work ethics as they scared away potential investors. He added that poor work ethics led to Botswana being ranked at position 72 among 144 countries in global competitiveness.

“This shows that we are slow on delivering services. We should provide quick service and avoid keeping clients in long queues. No client should go back home without being serviced,” said Mr Morupisi.

He urged government employees to stick to the set service standards and stick to the ten point agenda. He further asked employees to be more motivated and always display the concept of botho, adding that the quality of service will automatically improve if there is respect for clients.

“Heads of departments must always be exemplary in the work place. We should all use resources wisely and monitor each other so that we all do the right thing. The public service act is there to guide you,” said Mr Morupisi. ENDS
