President Advocate Duma Boko, on November 6, visited the Milk Valley Farm in Lobatse, where he appreciated a new herd of Girolandos, which were born in Botswana.
So far, 600 Girolandos have arrived from Brazil in three batches and the pregnant cows bore 123 calves since August.
Speaking during the tour, interim Milk Valley CEO, Mr Botshelo Mokotedi said so far, Milk Valley Farm had 811 cows including other existing breeds, which included the high yielding breed such as Red Friesland, Gernsey, Jersey, Brown Swiss and Ashires.
He said each dairy cow had the capacity to produce 25L of fresh milk per cow per day.
The expansion plan is targeted at transforming Milk Valley Farm into a large-scale commercial dairy operation and has since commenced a phased importation programme that will see 1 000 Girolando dairy cattle introduced to Milk Valley Farm.
President Boko and senior government officials toured the dairy farm and appreciated the farm's expansion plan, which includes construction of the new infrastructure ongoing at the farm to accommodate the increasing herd such as three cow sheds with the capacity to accommodate 400 cattle per shed.
The President also toured the rotary parlour and milk storage facilities as well as the cow bans. ENDS
