Botswana appreciates Algeria for human resource development

Botswana holds in high regard Algeria’s historical contribution to Africa’s liberation and its solidarity with fellow African nations.

It also values the cordial relations it shares with the North African state, founded on mutual respect, solidarity and a shared commitment to African unity and development.

“As we reflect on our long-standing diplomatic ties, we recognise the importance of building on our excellent political relations and translating this friendship into deeper economic cooperation and tangible benefits of our people,” said Ministry for International Relations, legal secretary.

Speaking at Algeria’s 72nd anniversary of the National Revolution of November 1, 1954, in Gaborone on November3, Ms Dimpho Mogami, said Botswana particularly appreciated Algeria’s continued support for its human resources development.

Algeria extended training opportunities to 95 Batswana in September, a welcome contribution in skills development.

Again, Ms Moremi expressed gratitude for the chance afforded to Botswana students pursuing studies at the Pan-African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences.

“These initiatives underscore technical training, knowledge exchange and skills transfer in strengthening our partnership. Looking ahead, Botswana sees considerable scope for expanding cooperation in areas aligned with our national priorities of economic diversification, investment promotion and job creation,” she said.

The initiatives include vocational and technical training, energy, agriculture and livestock development, pharmaceuticals, digital connectivity, transport, infrastructure, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Ms Mogami further stated that opportunities existed to explore cooperation between Botswana Oil and Algeria Sonatrach, Algeria’s state owned gas and oil company, promote Botswana beef products to the

Algerian market and strengthen partnerships in Information Communication Technology (ICT), research, media and sport.

She reaffirmed the government’s commitment and resolve to accelerate and scale up implementation of all agreed commitments, projects and initiatives that would mutually benefit their people.
Algeria ambassador to Botswana, Mr Mourad Boukadoum, said like Botswana, Algeria had invested heavily in education since independence in 1964.

Mr Boukadom said since the establishment of diplomatic relations over four decades, Algeria and Botswana illustrated the will of the Algerian government to further strengthen friendship between the two countries, develop a fruitful cooperation in areas of mutual interest, given the existing complementarities between the two economies.

He said they currently had 12 million children in schools: more than 4 000 young people enrolled in 2 000 vocational training centres and 1.9 million training in 117 universities and higher institutions of the country in the 2026-2027 academic year.

In order to improve the living conditions of the Algerians, more than three million housing units have been built or under construction since 2020.

“The government also launched the construction of several desalination water treatment plants to enhance the water security of the country,” said Mr Boukadom.

He further said that in 2025, Algeria launched the African Institute of Vocational Training and Education in Boumerdas, next to Algiers, which would contribute to empowering Africa’s youth through access to practical training and hands-on skills in alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
