Minister aware of state of roads
05 Mar 2014
Parliament has been informed that spot inspections on roads, parking lots and trenches are carried out when council officers are conducting business and supervising projects.
Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso said the frequency was increased to weekly inspections during the rainy season when most roads developed potholes.
Responding to a parliamentary question recently, Ms Tshireletso said she was aware that a number of internal roads and parking lots required maintenance because Gaborone City Council roads had exceeded their design life and needed to be reconstructed.
She indicated that the council had budgeted P1.5 million for contractors who would undertake spot improvement on a number of roads in the city for the period of January to March, 2014.
Ms Tshireletso told the house that a contract had been awarded to Seavex to undertake pothole patching on roads in Gaborone West, including Phase 4, to execute the works from January till March. The contractor has already done work on Haile Selasie, Nkuruma, Molosiwa and Lethuli Roads as well as the station Area, she added.
Ms Tshireletso said the contractor was on site and commenced works in Gaborone West area on February 25 and had already attended to Polokabatho Road near Marulamantsi Junior Secondary School.
Today, (February 27), the contractor is executing works along Mosekangwetsi Road near Gaborone West Police Station, she said.
Member of Parliament for Gaborone West South, Mr Botsalo Ntuane had asked the minister to state the frequency of inspection carried out on roads, parking lots and trenches in the Gaborone West South Constituency.
MP Ntuane also wanted to know whether she was aware that most internal roads and parking lots have potholes that damage vehicles. ends
