TANA pilot paves way for modern transport system

03 Nov 2026

Commuters could soon enjoy a more reliable, affordable and comfortable public transport system as government, in partnership with the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency, rolls out the TANA metro bus and metro rail initiative.

In its five-month pilot phase, four of the 10 procured electric buses are operating on the Phakalane–Game City and Tlokweng–Metsimotlhabe routes.

Each bus accommodates 24 passengers and comes equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, GPS tracking and CCTV cameras. It can travel approximately 250km on a full charge, with charging costing less than P100.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Keoagile Atamelang, said the pilot would help government assess passenger demand and operational requirements before expanding the service.

“Government is also working on a cashless payment system, Payless, expected to be piloted on November 14 and 15,” the minister said.

In an interview, one of the pilot project drivers, Mr Bathusi Lere, welcomed the initiative, saying its expansion could create more employment opportunities.

“I see this as a positive development, and if fully implemented and expanded, it could create opportunities for more people,” he said.

Beyond improving commuter experiences, TANA is expected to create jobs in driving, mechanics, cleaning and other support services as the project grows. ENDS
