Türkiye 103rd Republic Day, provides an opportunity to reflect on the 45 years of diplomatic relations between Botswana and Türkiye, established in 1981.
The event, hosted by Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye on October 29, highlighted its long-standing diplomatic relations with Botswana and commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, investment, education and development.
Speaking at the ceremony, Türkiye’s Ambassador to Botswana, Ms Ela BeÅŸkardeÅŸ Karagöl, scalled for the two countries to build on the longstanding relationship and expand cooperation in areas of mutual benefit.
“This year, I am especially excited to assume my duties as the Ambassador of Türkiye to Botswana in this special year that marks both the 60th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Botswana and the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Botswana,” she said.
Ms Karagöl said Türkiye remained committed to deepening cooperation with Botswana, particularly in investment, trade, development cooperation and education.
She noted that Turkish companies were already involved in Botswana’s energy, mining and infrastructure sectors, adding that there was room for further investment and increased trade between the two countries.
The ambassador also announced plans by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) to implement a project in Ghanzi and Charles Hill before the end of the year, aimed at enhancing the capacity of schools.
On education, she revealed that 37 Batswana students had benefited from Türkiye scholarships, expressing hope that more young people would get opportunities to study at Turkish universities.
Meanwhile, Minister for nternational Relations Dr Phenyo Butale said Botswana valued its longstanding relationship with Türkiye, which dates back to 1981.
“Over the last four decades, our countries have built a cordial and constructive relationship, supported by dialogue and a shared commitment to improving the lives of our peoples,” he said.
Dr Butale said cooperation between the two countries had grown to cover agriculture, education, trade and investment, capacity-building and mining.
He encouraged Turkish companies and investors to explore opportunities in Botswana, saying partnerships could contribute to skills transfer, enterprise development and employment creation, particularly among young people.
The minister further welcomed the government’s decision to establish a resident diplomatic mission in Ankara, describing it as a significant milestone that would strengthen political dialogue and facilitate trade and investment engagements.
He said Botswana looked forward to transforming the existing goodwill into practical outcomes that would benefit citizens and businesses in both countries.
“Botswana remains ready to deepen this relationship into a forward-looking strategic partnership based on mutual respect, shared interests and tangible benefits for our people,” he said. ENDS
