Former Botswana athletics team sprinter and Olympian, Leaname Maotoanong was laid to rest in Tlokweng Saturday.

He succumbed to short illness on October 26.

Maotoanong’s good heart and his outstanding achievements on the race tracks were the order of the day during a short funeral service in Kumakwane, before he was finally laid to rest in Tlokweng.

Everyone who took to the dais spoke warmly of Lux as Maotoanong was fondly called, and his selfless contribution to Botswana’s sporting success.

Childhood friend and neighbour, Koketso Modisaotsile, said Maotoanong’s departure had left a gaping hole and painful memories to everyone who was close to him.

She said Maotoanong was more of a brother to her as they grew up together in Kumakwane, and his unmatched personality would be greatly missed.

Former teammate and high school colleague, Keene Motukisi, said Maotoanong taught them to smile, laugh, live and love without judgment.

“Young or old, you treated all the same and left a little light in every heart that knew your name. Together we ran, together we raced, shared victories, laughter and memories time cannot erase,” he said.

Motukisi said though Maotoanong’s race had ended, his spirit lived on in every heart he touched and in every race they ran.

“Today, we pass this baton with heavy hearts and tears, thanking you for the laughter, the love, the shared years. Rest now, our brother, your race of life is done, we will carry your legacy in every race we run,” he added.

His uncle, Suzie Mooketsi, said from a young age, Maotoanong had shown a remarkable talent for athletics, which led him to join the national team.

“His dedication and hard work earned him an opportunity to represent the country on numerous international stages. His commitment to excellence and his passion for athletics inspired many young athletes locally,” he said.

Throughout his athletics career, Maotoanong achieved remarkable success securing silver and gold in the relay events, including the prestigious Commonwealth games, African championships and the IAAF world championships.

After retiring from competitive athletics in 2023, Maotoanong pursued further education and obtained certification from World Athletics.

He yearned to share his expertise with those he crossed paths with, especially the next generation of budding athletes. ENDS
