A team of seasoned players from Selebi Phikwe, Orapa and Gaborone clubs was on Sunday crowned the champions of the 2026 SRR Bowling Tournament which was held in Jwaneng over the weekend.
Full Bias B triumphed over 17 other teams, accumulating 61 points and walking away with P12,000 prize money, a trophy and medals, followed by Diamond Eagles and The Entertainer who won P8,000 and P6000 after garnering 58 and 46 points respectively.
The tournament, now in its fourth year, was also graced by two teams from South Africa.
Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, Botswana Bowling Association president, Marea Modutlwa appreciated the development of sport from grassroots level.
She said the Re Ba Bona Ha programme, which Jwaneng was home to, was instrumental in stimulating interest in young people as well as the growth of bowling in general.
Modutlwa noted that most of the young talents were discovered through the programme, hence ensuring continuity between generations.
“As you are aware, this weekend, we had so many youth players taking part in this tournament and we will like to continue with that because these are our young players who feed into the national team.
“Every year we send youth players to represent us outside Botswana and more than 50 per cent of them come from Jwaneng, and we are really grateful for the support from Debswana and Jwaneng Bowling Club to grow Bowling from grassroots,” she said. She further noted that in an endeavour to support Jwaneng’s vision of being a sporting hub, the association had plans to bid for hosting the elite World Bowls Champion of Champion before 2032.
Modutlwa said they were working on a proposal and consultations with all the relevant stakeholders would determine the year and other related logistics.
“I am proud to say that the Botswana Bowling Association is working on a proposal to host the Champion of Champions here in Jwaneng, and that would need the support of all the stakeholders so we will accordingly reach out and work on the proposal,” she noted.
Jwaneng Mine Head of Underground Mining, Ben Swarts applauded the players for their participation and dedication to the sport.
He said Bowling was a family sport, which was accommodative for all. “There is no other sport that you can compete against your son or daughter and encourage them to win. I understand why Botswana’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth was in Bowling,” he noted.
He urged them to keep encouraging others to join so Bowling keeps growing in leaps and bounds.
Jwaneng Mayor, Ronica Ntsimako applauded the organisers and partners for their contribution in establishing Jwaneng as a sporting hub.
He said Jwaneng with its sport facilities, was capable of hosting big sporting events, which could augment the town’s economic diversification efforts. ENDS
