Government is seeking alternative solutions to address the deteriorating infrastructure at Serule Police Station, despite having no funds currently budgeted for its maintenance, says Minister for State President, Defence and Security, Mr Moeti Mohwasa.

Speaking during a recent tour of the facility, Minister Mohwasa acknowledged the station’s poor condition and emphasised that maintaining public infrastructure was critical to providing a conducive working environment for police officers and ensuring effective service delivery.

“While no funds are currently allocated for this purpose, government is committed to exploring every possible avenue to address the maintenance issues here. Maintaining government facilities is paramount. Government understands the challenges faced here and is determined to consider effective measures to improve conditions,” he said.

An inspection of the station revealed several defects, including a damaged ceiling, broken doors and windows as well as structural cracks across walls and floors.

Deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Ms Gorata Moleboge, explained that police station structures were designed to remain functional for at least 20 years before requiring major overhauls. 

Having been operational since 2005, Ms Moleboge noted that the Serule facility was long due for routine maintenance.

For his part, Assistant Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Letlhogonolo Barongwang, identified inadequate supervision as a major contributor to the rapid decline of public facilities.

Mr Barongwang stated that government was upgrading personnel training and establishing stricter supervisory frameworks to monitor ongoing projects closely. 

Early detection of defects, he noted, would ensure that contractors adhered to agreed quality standards and guarantee value for public funds. ENDS
