The Trans Kalahari Corridor Secretariat (TKCS) has identified Jwaneng as a strategic place to hold the inaugural Trans Kalahari Corridor Investment and Connectivity Gold Day on September 12.
With a proposed theme: A Swing for a Purpose, A Wave for a Story-Driving Trade, Linking Markets, the event is aimed at highlighting golf as a platform for promoting investment and enhancing regional collaboration for government and the private sector.
Subsequently, Jwaneng was selected as a strategic location, owing to its proximity to the corridor and availability of adequate golf facilities.
“This is one of the initiatives that we came up with to help with transforming the TKC into an economic corridor,” TKC marketing and communications manager, Ms Ankwetse Hunda said during a breakfast meeting with Jwaneng District leadership recently.
She noted that the event coincided with Botswana’s 60th anniversary independence in order to accord organisations and local authorities an opportunity to reflect on their growth since independence.
In addition to stimulating economic activity along the corridor, the initiative is also intended to bridge the gap between markets available within the corridor partners and beyond.
Additionally, she said the event aimed at attracting investment opportunities in areas such as transport infrastructure, logistics as well as mining value chains, thereby positioning Botswana as a destination of choice for investors.
Jwaneng Mayor, Mr Ronica Ntsimako embraced the initiative, which he said resonated with their aspiration of positioning Jwaneng for a sustainable future beyond diamond mining, which entails unlocking opportunities in various sectors including sport and tourism.
He said the council, in collaboration with other stakeholders, continued to invest in infrastructure that would enhance the economic opportunities along the corridor, as well as contributing to the national objective of economic diversification.
He applauded TKCS for its commitment to exploring economic activities that could benefit the communities along the corridor.
While he noted that Jwaneng was ready to host the envisioned Golf Day and other similar events, he underscored the need for road users to exercise utmost responsibility to ensure that the economic opportunities offered by the corridor were sustainable and impactful.
Consequently, Jwaneng District Commissioner, Mr Goleba Kgari implored businesses and industry players to position themselves to make the most of the upcoming event, which he said would go a long way in stimulating the local economy.
He said this was an opportunity to promote tourism, which was one of the key priorities of the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme. ENDS
