Orlando Pirates crowned Champions

The excitement surrounding the much-anticipated Clash of Legends featuring long-time rivals Township Rollers, Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates may have ended on Saturday with Orlando Pirates crowned champions, but the event’s legacy is set to endure far beyond the National Stadium.
Headlined by the presence of President Advocate Duma Boko and First Lady Kaone, the camaraderie, massive turnouts and emotional moments on the pitch have left a lasting impact on players and fans alike who braved the day’s chill and rain as temperatures plummeted into lower digits.
The event was about more than reliving football feuds of the past.
At its core, Clash of Legends seeks to promote the spirit of giving back by bringing together former stars to raise funds and awareness for retired players facing difficult circumstances in their post-football lives.
While the players’ achievements on the field have long been celebrated, their impact off the field is now expected to rival their legendary performances. Though charitable initiatives may not always attract headlines, they remain among football’s most meaningful contributions to society.
The high-profile event combined sporting nostalgia with philanthropy, aiming to address social challenges, provide relief to those in need and uplift underprivileged football communities.
Having emerged from humble backgrounds themselves, many of the former players understand the realities of poverty, limited educational opportunities and economic hardship.
Their experiences have inspired them to use football as a vehicle for positive social change.
Clash of Legends project coordinator, Sekhana Koko, said the annual charity football event remained committed to its motto: A ticket bought is a life touched and would continue striving to leave a lasting legacy through transforming lives across the country.
He said the beneficiaries of the fourth edition would also include football supporters who had remained devoted to the game despite facing personal challenges and disabilities.
“After consulting with some of the stakeholders in the football fraternity, we have identified five beneficiaries to assist in relieving them from the hardships of live through paying for some of the medical costs,” Koko said.
Of the five beneficiaries, four are football supporters living with various medical conditions and economic challenges. Assistance will be tailored to their specific needs.
Koko reaffirmed the project’s commitment to honouring individuals who had contributed to football while extending support to supporters in need.
He added that the programme would also assist former Township Rollers and national team striker Tshepiso ‘Sox’ Molwantwa to resume his football academy in Makwate.
“The culture of giving back to society in football is longer an exception. Instead, it is fast becoming the norm. By setting active social change as a priority, Clash of Legends is changing life and defining parameters from football triumphs to impactful contributions to the communities,” he said.
Koko noted that the true value of Clash of Legends lies not only in the donations it provided, but also in the positive impact it created within communities and the spirit of generosity it fostered across the football fraternity. ENDS
