Wayeyi Cultural festival unites multitudes

The Wayeyi cultural centre in Gumare came to life as multitudes gathered in one spirit to celebrate Wayeyi culture on Saturday.
Known as the river people with their origins traced back to Central Africa, Wayeyi are famous for their rich culture, unmatched skills in using mokoro (canoes), fishing and basketry.
This years’ Wayeyi Cultural Festival lived to expectation with the audience treated to performances of traditional dances of Seperu and Kharakhara by various local groups and some from Namibia.
Shighyakao and Tiwazani of Gumare, Nyinamwere of Jao, and Khwexini from Namibia, showcased Wayeyi cultural dance.
Assistant Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Ignatius Moswaane, paid tribute to Wayeyi forefathers who played a pivotal role in cultural preservation and heritage from generation to generation.
He commended the pioneers of the annual festival, which ensured cultural revival and celebration of identity.
The celebrations, he said promoted unity among Wayeyi in Botswana and those in the neighboring Namibia, who never failed to be part of the festivities.
Wayeyi have been able to strengthen their traditions and the value of Bogosi through such gatherings.
He said government supports equality of all tribes and indigenous languages as evidenced by the use of indigenous languages in news bulletins on Radio Botswana and Botswana Television.Tsholofelo Bankgotsi, speaking on behalf of Wayeyi Kgosi stated that the cultural festival was a platform for remembrance and renewal as Wayeyi people.
He said it was a testament to the Wayeyi people’s resilience in preserving their cultural identity and language as they had survived struggles faced by their forefathers, which could have led to the distinction of their culture. ends
