Madikwe Cultural Festival shows growth

26 Mar 2026

The fifth annual Madikwe Cultural Festival, scheduled for March 28 at Newville Gardens in Sikwane, has over the years shown significant growth.

Event organiser, Karabo Sename, attributed its growth to sponsors’ interest, the event’s Corporate Social Initiative (CSI) as well as its profitability.

“In the past, we ran the event on a loss and we could not carry our CSI project. But we have since realised profits, hence a CSI project at Kgabotshwene Primary School in Sikwane, where we sponsored their prize giving ceremony in 2025,” he said.

Such projects are identified according to the needs in the Dinokeng region, Sename said explaining how the education sector was chosen in 2025. He said the school had been able to improve in the Primary School Leaving Examinations, as they were now trophy holders in their cluster.

"We will definitely go back to support the education sector if indeed our contribution to the school’s prize giving has motivated learners in that regard,” said Sename.

Explaining the concept of Madikwe cultural festival, he said the event sought to celebrate not only Sekgatla but Setswana culture holistically.

Sename said the day would start with a traditional breakfast cuisine for the first 100 people while during the day, patrons would be treated to entertainment by various traditional showcases from Diphala tsa Setso, Tawana ya Koma, Culture Spears, Rraarona Ramonyaku, Moologa, Dr Vom, Kabo Crush, Charma Gal as well as Mafitlhakgosi who would be making their debut at the festival.

A cultural tourism event, Madikwe is a festival from which visitors will learn, discover, experience and consume the tangible and intangible cultural displays and products at the event. Traditional choir activity by Matlapa a Leloto is one intangible cultural feature which the patrons will get to experience.

“The highlight of our event is no doubt the kgoroso ya bojalwa jwa setso activity which we pride ourselves in as it showcases our tradition in a sacred and ceremonial celebration different from the rest,” Sename further said.

Meanwhile, Soil Engineers Botswana representative, Modise Powane, said their sponsorship came in the form of payment of artistes, venue as well as stage and food catering for the patrons. Powane encouraged potential sponsors to support creative events to sustain the industry. ENDS
