Inter party dialogue motion falls off

Parliament on Friday, February 21 rejected a motion by Francistown South MP calling for the establishment of inter-party dialogue.
Francistown South legislator, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi said the ruling party needs to consult with opposition parties those represented and not represented in Parliament, in order to confront challenges facing the nation.
He said he was aware the Constitution provided for inter party dialogue saying however it does not happen.
MP Mmolotsi said each party has a different view and therefore they can collectively assist the ruling party in coming up with solutions. He said parties used to meet during the presidency of former president, Sir Ketumile Masire, who ensured it was institutionalised in the Constitution.
Earlier, the MP for Moshupa, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi said the mover of the motion was biased as he called for dialogue to discuss political reforms, unemployment, land and the economy.
Mr Masisi, who is also the Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration said systems, institutions and instruments were in place to address the very challenges presented by the MP.
He said there were institutions that promote inter-party dialogue, adding that when in Parliament they were actually engaging in inter-party dialogue.
Dismissing the motion, MP for Molepolole North, Mr Gaotlhaetse Matlhabaphiri said inter-party dialogue existed even during Sir Ketumile Masire’s administration.
Those who supported the motion included the Kanye South legislator, Mr Kentse Rammidi who said party leaders should constantly meet to discuss national issues, adding that the inter-party dialogue could have helped to avert the public strike.
For his part, MP for Okavango Mr Bagalatia Arone said inter-party dialogue was a fundamental democratic issue. ENDS
