Rugby union readies for new season

11 Feb 2013

Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) is leaving no stone unturned in its endeavour to sharpen the skills of its coaches across all league divisions in order to get ready for the new season.

Consequently, rugby coaches converged at Thornhill Primary School in Gaborone on February 9.  They underwent intensive theoretical coaching classes, which were followed by rigorous practical exercise at Hogs Rugby grounds.

The intention of the coaching seminar, which was conducted by South African-based rugby Blue Bulls club elite coaching educators; Fielies Coetzee, Kees Lensing and Kosie Horn, was to equip local coaches with new coaching laws and techniques.

According to BRU secretary general, Kadimo Modisa, the committee realised that coaches needed to be refreshed especially before the league started so that they would be rejuvenated and at the same time be at par with their counterparts elsewhere in terms of laws governing play in the field.

Modisa said there was need for local coaches to be equipped with new rugby laws as they kept on changing from time to time, adding that though they faced other challenges, they would do anything within their power to ensure strict adherence and quality coaching of local coaches as well as good refereeing.

Participants were drawn from schools, clubs, national team, Under 15s and sevens as well as under 19 national teams.

Cubs, which attended this one day seminar were from Jwaneng, Francistown, Selebi Phikwe, Mochudi, Metsimotlhabe and Gaborone.

Meanwhile, BRU agreed in principle to engage Blue Blues coaching educators to provide coaching clinics as well as to extend the same privilege to referees and also provide administrative assistance whenever possible.

The two parties exchanged their yearly plans and Blue Blues were also expected to conduct referee seminar on March 2 to 3. ENDS
