Minister admits school facilities need urgent repair

The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education has adopted possible methods that will be affordable to provide adequate maintenance to government facilities owing to the current fiscal constraints faced by government, Parliament heard Wednesday. 

Answering a parliamentary question, Minister Nono Kgafela-Mokoka said the state of schools, especially boarding schools, across the country including in the Serowe West Constituency were in a dire state. 

Ms Kgafela-Mokoka said Mmashoro Junior Secondary School was the hardest hit and therefore, the ministry had devise ways through which it could rehabilitated it to make it conducive for learners.

“Currently there is a company attending to the plumbing works at both boys and girls’ hostels,” she said. 

She added that the new Ikageng Public Works Programme would come handy to address maintenance issues. 

Serowe West MP, Mr Onalepelo Kedikilwe had asked the minister if was aware that all schools in his constituency were not conducive for learning. 

Mr Kedikilwe also asked if the ministry would consider engaging Serowe brigade to undertake the necessary renovations on the facilities to reduce costs and align it with the new national policy announced by government to utilise the new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for students to acquire skills.
