KAZA states launch Green Growth project
04 Nov 2025
The five partner states of Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA) have launched a Green Growth for KAZA Project, an initiative aimed to drive sustainable development and conserve the rich natural ecosystems of the area.

Launched during the ongoing 1st Africa Biodiversity Summit at Royal Aria Convention Centre in Tlokweng from  November 2-5, the project is expected to strengthen community-based conservation, expand sustainable tourism opportunities and reinforce climate resilience in one of Africa’s largest trans-boundary conservation landscapes, covering about 520,000 square kilometres.

The project represents a major milestone in linking conservation efforts with socio-economic advancement across the five KAZA partner states of Botswana, Angola, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Launching the project on November 3, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi said the initiative aimed to develop tourism and biodiversity-based enterprises as well as promote eco-friendly livelihoods for communities living within and around the conservation area.

He stated that the project embodied KAZA’s core vision of conserving natural resources for the benefit and empowerment of local people.

“The future of biodiversity conservation in our region depends on our ability to align environmental protection with economic opportunities. This project ensures that the people who live closest to nature also benefit most from it," he said.

Mr Mmolotsi commended the European Union (EU) for its continued support through the NaturAfrica Programme, which focused on preserving Africa’s unique ecosystems while improving the well-being of rural communities.

“The success of the Green Growth for KAZA project will depend on joint ownership, commitment, and sustained investment by all KAZA Partner States,” he said, and therefore urged member countries to work collectively to ensure lasting impact.
The summit is held under the theme: Leveraging Africa’s Biodiversity for Prosperity. ENDS
