Molefi Senior Secondary School in Mochudi has benefitted from the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education’s refurbishment of schools’ campaign dubbed #CountMeIn.
The campaign, launched at Molefi and Gaborone senior secondary schools on October 14 by Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Ms Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, is meant to refurbish and maintain dilapidated school infrastructure across the country.
The initiative that currently targets Form Five examination classrooms in 11 schools, she said, would not disrupt learners, emphasising that the paint being used was water-soluble and had minimal, non-intrusive odour.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by education sector, Minister Kgafela-Mokoka encouraged broad participation to the course, noting that those unable to contribute financially were welcome to offer other service as support to the course.
She said one of her key priorities, was refurbishment and expansion of schools’ infrastructure that was delayed due to financial constraints. Ms Kgafela-Mokoka called on members of the communities, business community, leaders and alumni to rally behind the cause and to donate anything in kind for renovations.
“This programme is a plea to everyone to join hands with us in restoring classrooms, some of which will soon host national examinations,” Mokoka said.
Outlining the campaign, the minister said the ministry would mobilise resources and volunteers to repair classrooms damaged by recent floods and those buildings that lacked maintenance in the past.
Ms Kgafela-Mokoka also encouraged learners to take care of the school resources, stop vadalism and encouraged them to not indulge into activities that may destroy their future.
Molefi Senior Secondary, School head Ms Tselane Temeki said she was thankful for the paints as they would go a long way in making the school environment habitable for learning.
She said the school had missed many years of cyclic maintenance, adding that painting the school would make it look new and conducive for learning.
MP for Mochudi Central, Mr Mpho Morolong expressed gratitude to the minister, affirming his own commitment to the campaign and urging the community to carry forward the spirit of collectiveness beyond the initiative. ENDS
