Methodist church reaches out to learners

Addressing pupils’ needs is essential to supporting their effective learning.
Ms Mpho Lesego, the school head of Motswedi Secondary School in Gaborone said this during her address at a donation ceremony to Modisi Primary School in Moshaneng by the Methodist Church of Southern Africa Women Manyano Service and Prayer Union of Kanye on Saturday.
Ms Lesego said the donation to the school’s underprivileged learners, comprising 77 pairs of school shoes and stationery worth about P19,000, would enhance learning, therefore making education more human rights centred.
She said giving to the disadvantaged children was proof that the church had taken note that education was more than just a basic need.
She commended the Methodist Church’s women’s wing for extending their love to disadvantaged children, whom she termed the riches of the nation’s future.
“A woman is a being of a loving heart, and a woman of faith is moved to share the little she has,” she added, noting that it was important for believers to be of service to humanity.
On behalf of the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education, acting dicrector for the south region, Mr Oscar Leatso conveyed appreciation to the Methodist women for their generous donation to the learners at Modisi Primary School and by extension to the Moshana community.
He said the gesture of compassion demonstrated the solidarity and stakeholder partnership that was encouraged by the ministry through its strategic plans.
He said even in the most economically advanced nations, quality education could never be achieved through government efforts alone.
“It has to be a shared responsibility,” he added.
Furthermore, Mr Leatso said when churches and communities came together, exceptional educational outcomes could be reached for every child.
He said to many among the children who received the shoes, a pair of shoes was not only a necessity but was something that would bring dignity and confidence to propel them towards a better future.
Mr Leatso said the noble gesture would be a motivation to the learners to perform better in their studies hence an expectation that academic results would improve at the school.
He called for the rescusitation of the Adopt-A-School concept, saying it allowed for individuals and community groups to partner with government on issues of education.
When welcoming guests earlier on, Kgosi Seate Marumo of Moshana appreciated the efforts of the Methodist Church for its good deeds.
However, he also pleaded with the church to teach believers on self-reliance to reduce members’ reliance on aid. ENDS
