Sustainable tourism Govt priority

02 Oct 2025

Government is committed to advancing policies and programmes that align with the national vision and supports initiatives that promote eco-tourism, cultural preservation, renewable energy solutions and skills development across the sector.

This was said by acting Minister of Environment and Tourism, Major General Pius Mokgware at the City Tourism Run in Gaborone, held in conjunction with this year’s World Tourism Day on Saturday, under the theme: Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.

“Botswana reaffirms a shared commitment to building a tourism sector that drives economic growth, protects the planet and uplifts people,”  Maj. Gen. Mokgware said.

He added that tourism was a powerful tool for economic diversification, a proud expression of Botswana’s rich natural and cultural heritage and a promoter of a healthy lifestyle. He said the sector extended beyond wildlife, adding “it is a vehicle for peace, culture sharing, it creates employment, builds bilateral relations between countries and brings peace among nations.

Maj. Gen. Mokgware urged Batswana to take the sector seriously. At global level, he said tourism had proven itself to be not only a driver of economic growth but also a powerful agent of positive change.

He highlighted that the City Tourism Run was more than just a sporting activity because it provided a unique opportunity to showcase the beauty and character of Gaborone and encouraged both residents and visitors to experience the capital city in an engaging way.

“It transforms communities by creating jobs, inspires innovation through technology and creativity, and strengthens global solidarity by building bridges of understanding among people and cultures,” he explained.

Maj. Gen. Mokgware indicated that sustainable transformation in tourism ensured that the benefits did not come at the expense of future generations, but balanced growth with responsibility, protected natural treasures, empowered communities and ensured that every step forward left no one behind. Minister Mokgware urged Batswana to halt gender-based violence and generally refrain from bad social ills.

For his part, Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) acting chief executive officer, Mr Justice Ofentse, reiterated that the City Tourism Run was part of a broader vision and offered a unique way to experience the capital city.

“Beyond the race, the run showcases Gaborone landmarks, promotes active lifestyles and encourages both residents and visitors to discover the vibrancy of urban spaces,” Mr Ofentse said.

He noted that the initiative aligned with BTO’s mandate to promote not only traditional tourist attractions but also the city as a place of culture, history and modern experiences. The run was organised by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism in partnership with the Fearless Club and included 5km, 10km, 21km, 25km, and 30km race categories. ENDS
