Association aims to unite farmers

31 Aug 2025

The launch of the Gasita-Lorolwane Farmers Association marks a pivotal moment for community collaboration.

With the decline in farming activities posing a threat to livelihoods in the area, the association aims to unite farmers in tackling pressing issues such as livestock diseases, stock theft, and reduced grazing lands.

Speaking during the launch in Lorolwane recently, Gasita-Lorolwane Farmers Association chairperson, Professor Keitseope Nthomang highlighted the critical state of farming in Botswana, where a substantial proportion of the population relied on agriculture for their livelihoods. Prof Nthomang said the association sought to create a platform for knowledge sharing, fostering collective problem-solving among farmers.

With prevalent ailments such as malignant catarrhal fever and measles affecting livestock, he said the association’s formation could be timely for addressing these health challenges and providing support for affected farmers.

Concern about stock theft and illegal cattleposts had been voiced by various community leaders, including Mr Phongoro Mpelegang, underscoring the need for organised efforts to mitigate such threats. The suggestion to improve police support through better transportation further emphasises the community’s commitment to safeguarding agricultural interests.

Lorolwane Farmers Committee chairperson, Mr Thapelo Mpolokang expressed hope that the association would open a constructive dialogue around enhancing relations between livestock farmers and crop farmers. He suggested that the Temo Letlotlo initiative should assist more farmers in acquiring fencing as a proactive step toward resolving conflicts over grazing rights, which remained a critical challenge.

Remarks by Kgosi Matlhoakgosi Matlho of Lorolwane resonated with the broader objective of boosting livestock numbers to five million, reiterating the support for farmers. He appealed for innovative solutions from farmers, promising a collaborative approach to navigating the myriad challenges they faced.

He said the farmers association stands as a beacon of hope for revitalising the agricultural sector in the area. By fostering community solidarity and addressing the pressing challenges, he said the association had the potential to reinvigorate farming practices and enhance the overall wellbeing of Batswana in the region.
