Proposed Lobatse Airport promises economic growth

30 Jul 2025

A proposed development of an Airport City by Cambridge Investments company in Lobatse in partnership with government will serve as an engine of regional growth and revitalise Lobatse economy.
Cambridge Investment executive chairperson, Mr Philip Fischer donated land for such envisaged Airport City.
Mr Fischer said Cambridge Investments Property Development Company holds about 8 000 hectares of freehold land known as Lobatse Estates located within Lobatse council.
He said the company was prepared to avail about 3 500 hectares of industrial, commercial and residential zoned property to make for Airport City.
Mr Fischer said Airport City development would support the Lobatse Special Economic Zone initiative.
He said the proximity of the Airport City and the SEZ as well as the state of the art Pioneer Commercial boarder post would be convenient for transportation and for prospective investors.
Mr Fischer said Lobatse Estates North offered vertically integrated export-driven industrial estate and multi modal transport including road, rail, hoping air travel would be added through the Airport City project.
He said the development would eventually turn Lobatse into a regional logistics hub designed to fully exploit the spatial economic advantages as it was located along the Trans-Kalahari Corridor.
Additionally, he said Cambridge Investments offered to avail 40 hectares of freehold land to house a category II International Aerodrome with a 2000m airstrip. Another essential infrastructural component, he said was an eastern bypass road.
“Air travel and an eastern bypass road is necessary to tie it all together and make it ideal to do business in Lobatse. The current government wants to facilitate and stimulate an export driven economic development through industrialisation, digitilisation, commercial development, therefore necessary to open up easy access to other countries and promote trade,” he said.
Mr Fischer said the infrastructure would benefit the broader community adding that currently there was high truck volume passing through the town causing congestion and would ultimately be addressed by a bypass.
Lobatse Member of Parliament, Mr Kamal Jacobs said Airport City development would be an engine of growth for local economic development and turn Lobatse into a regional logistics hub for Southern African Development Community and thus enhance regional trade.
Mr Jacobs said more employment opportunities would be created giving Lobatse the much needed economic boost. ENDS
