Movement of teachers not disruptive

12 Feb 2014

The constant movement of teachers on temporary employment from one school to the other when contracts expire is not disruptive to learners.

The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development (MoESD), Mr Patrick Masimolole said when responding to a question in Parliament that temporary teachers were employed when permanent teachers were on study leave, maternity leave, sick leave or when the position was vacant.

Assistant Minister Masimolole stated that when the incumbent returned from leave or when the post was filled, the temporary teacher was terminated or moved to another school, the learners then remained with their original teacher without any disruption.

However, he acknowledged that the constant movement was disruptive to the temporary teacher, noting that longer contracts were offered when the incumbent was on study leave of extended period of one year to four years.

The minister was responding to a question asked by the MP for Tonota North, Mr Fidelis Molao who had asked him whether the constant movement of teachers on temporary employment from one school to the other when contracts expire is not disruptive to learners.

Mr Molao also asked whether it would not be prudent to give them longer contracts to enable them to have synergy with students. ENDS
